Hundreds of Natural enemies

THIS IS A RARE PHENOMENON OCCURRED DURING LAST KHARIF . ENTIRE PADDY AREA IN THE DISTRICT IS SEEN, PROTECTED BY LAKHS OF NATURAL ENEMIES.THE BENEFICIAL INSECT POPULATION ENORMOUSLY INCREASED. AT THE LIGHT (TRAP)IN THE PHOTO MIRID BUG (BENEFICIAL)POPULATION IS SEEN ALONG WITH BPH(PEST)

BUMPER HARVESTS THANKS TO FARMERS FIELD SCHOOLS
HIGHEST YIELDS OBTAINED DURING KHARIF 2007, IN VIZIANAGARAM DISTRICT of ANDHRA PRADESH without using pesticides- LOW NITROGEN APPLICATION AND CONSERVATION OF ATURAL ENEMIES - THE REASONS behind the success- farmer’s fields schools ( POLAMBADI PROGRAMMES) helped alot.
RICE – NORMAL YIELD - 1848 kg/ha.
AVERAGE YIELD during kharif 2007 - 3700 kg/ha.
B.A. Srinivas, farmer of cheepuruvalasa village of kothavalasa mandal is very happy. He said that he got the highest yield, when compared to the past 5 years. The speciality is that he had not invested a single rupee on plant protection measures. He admits boldly that once he was the highest user of pesticides in his village and used to spend thousands of rupees until he undergone Polambadi training. He was imparted training on integrated crop management techniques(ICM) in the farmers field school (polambadi) conducted by the mandal agricultural officer , in their village in the previous year.
The seasonal conditions, during kharif 2007 are very favorable for crop production and the farmers of vizianagaram district reaped bumper harvests of paddy crop. Thanks to natural enemies, which played a major role.
Problems in paddy cultivation in Vizianagaram district:
Small and scattered holdings, cultivation under small tanks, lack of supplemental irrigation facilities, erratic and deficit rain fall, late onset of monsoon, prolonged dry spells, and light textured soils low in organic carbon and nutrient contents, pose serious problems on the productivity front, by which the paddy cultivation often lands in troubles.
Rain fed cultivation often leads to delayed sowings, delayed transplantations with over aged seedlings, due to which application of excess ‘N’ by distressed farmers is a common phenomenon observed in the area. This situation causes severe pest attacks, leading to indiscriminate use of pesticides which ultimately leads to rise in cost of cultivation. Pesticides like Monocrotophos, Chlorpyrephos and Methyl parathion dust which are highly hazardous, are generally used on paddy crop. Insect pests like leaf folder, stem borer, brown plant hopper and diseases like blast and sheath blight are commonly seen in the area.
IMPACT OF FARMERS FIELD SCHOOLS:
Farmers field schools have been conducted in all major villages up to 2007 . The programme succeeded in mobilizing farmers towards integrated crop management techniques and also resulted reduction in cost of cultivation and crop losses due to pests and diseases.
Sri L.Adinarayana Murty, another farmer from Vasadi village says Polambadi ( FFS-Rice ) programme implemented in their village brought dramatic changes in their cultivation practices. “Farmers now know what to do and what not to do . They discuss in groups and take decisions. They are now observing the plants closely for the presence of natural enemies to post pone or even skip pesticide sprayings”. He says he can recognize many natural enemies like spiders, dragonflies, grillids, mirid bugs, long horned grass hoppers, lady bird beetles etc.
Farmers now learnt that application of excess quantities of urea make the leaves more palatable and attracts pest populations. So they reduced the application of urea. As a result ,the leaf folder pest which develops mainly at places where urea application is high, could not find its entry in the fields.
NATURAL ECOLOGICAL BALANCE MAINTAINED:
More over, as the farmers have been continuously educated on the adverse effects of pesticides on beneficial insects through farmers field schools by Agricultural Department , many of them have not resorted to application of pesticides. This situation helped beneficial insects to develop in fields.
Leaf folder pest which has caused havoc for the last 5 years was not at all seen during 2007.
Though BPH and Jassid infestation started during early September, it only helped in availability of sufficient food for their natural enemies and never crossed economic injury levels due to which beneficial insects developed in sufficient numbers in paddy fields. The pests which occurred in epidemic level during 2005 (i.e. Leaf folder) and 2006 (BPH and Jassids) could not find their place during 2007.
PESTICIDE CONSUMPTION ON PADDY REDUCED BY 75%:
It is interesting to note that there is a drastic reduction in consumption of pesticides as per the information from pesticide dealers.
Mr. Subrahmanyam, a pesticide dealer in Vizianagaram said that he lost more than 50% of his business .He also said that his seasonal selling of neem cake increased from 50 M.T.s and went upto 150 M.Ts this year. He also opined that this is certainly the impact of farmers field schools conducted in the district. FFSs have been conducted for the past 3 years in the district . All the FFSs may not be able to make all villages pesticide free. But they certainly help to induce thinking in the minds of thousands of farmers against pesticides. The message of farmer field schools now believed to have been reached to thousands of farmers.
·In vizianagaram district Pesticide consumption during 2007 up to October, 07 is only
4.01 M.Ts. of active ingredient while the consumption during the
Previous year 2006, up to October,06 is 16.0 M.Ts.
· Farmers field schools and Campaigns against pesticides by Agricultural department worked.
It is a fact that more than 70% of the farmers have not sprayed pesticides, which resulted in non elimination of beneficial insects from the fields and their populations increased enormously which could easily suppress pest populations. For example, the populations of Mirid bug, a natural enemy of BPH, have never been observed in previous years at these levels at light traps and street lights near the fields. Only Jassids and BPH were seen along with 1-2% Mirid bugs, then.
(In fact, last year I had to wait days together to catch a Miridbug’s image in my camera. But during current year, hundreds and even thousands of them are found at lights during night time - author)
All these conditions have helped in rising of paddy yields. Now the farmers are very happy as they got higher yields with reduced cost of cultivation.
COST OF CULTIVATION REDUCED-Rs. 7.0 CRORES SAVED:
It is estimated that in general, 60% of the paddy area is sprayed at least twice in a season with harmful chemicals which cost about Rs. 2000/- per hectare. Consequently, an amount of Rs. 10 t0 12 Crores is spent every year on plant protection measures. As 75% of the farmers avoided pesticides, the amount spent on PP measures has not exceeded even Rs. 3.0 crores in the district, thus saving an amount of more than Rs.7.0 crores.
FFS- ENLIGHTENING THE MINDS OF FARMERS:
Impact of FFS is clearly seen in Vizianagaram district. Farmers realized that excess application of Nitrogenous fertilizers (Especially UREA) is the root cause of many pest and disease problems and pesticides are not at all a solution for managing pests.
Organic matter content of the soil plays an important role in healthy crop growth. However, we need not apply hundreds of tonnes of organic manures to compensate the chemical fertilizers. Growing green manure crop and in situ incorporation is the most important factor contributing to higher yields.
Timely sowings can help in good growth and minimize pest complex.
By protecting and conserving natural enemies (beneficial insects) we can easily tackle the pest problems without using hazardous pesticides.
It is once again proved that “Natural enemies” are capable of growing into sufficient numbers to completely suppress /eliminate the pest populations.
Farmers field schools in Vizianagaram district succeeded in spreading this message.

NURSERY READY TO TRANSPLANT
Here you can see the paddy seedlings ready to be transplanted. Farmers in our area generally commit many small mistakes which lead to yield loss.GAPS IDENTIFIED:
paddy seedlings are pulled and kept in field and on field bunds for 2 to 3 days before they are transplanted.
No care is taken while pulling nursery. pulled seedlings( roots) are washed thoroughlyand entire soil is removed so as to .
Nursery is raised some where away from main field and transported
and delay in transportation is also a common phenomenon .
Urea is applied to nurseries just few days before transplantation .
POLAMBADI -Farmers Field School, provides good oppertunity of enlightening farmers on these gaps.

SUMMER SHOWERS
Summer showers started during this week. How ever daily maximum temperatures are around 43 degrees centigrade. Farmers are preparing to sow Mesta crop in their Drylands. The Normal area of Mesta ,(a Fibre crop) is 43,300 hectares . Majority of Mesta crop of the state is in vizianagaram district .Friday, May 09, 2008

ONCE , FARMERS USED TO APPLY SILT FROM TANK BEDS TO THEIR FIELDS, ESPECIALLY IN DRY LANDS WHICH ARE DEFICIENT IN MANY ESSENTIAL PLANT NUTRIENTS. TANK SILT IS A RICH SOURCE OF MANY MICRO AND MACRO NUTRIENTS .SO THE CROPS NEVER FACED ANY NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES.BUT NOW FARMERS DISCONTINUED THE PRACTICE AND NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES LIKE ZINC AND IRON HAVE BECOME COMMON IN MANY AREAS.

EFFECT OF VERMICOMPOST
VERMICOMPOST IS VERY EFFECTIVE IN INITIATING FLOWERING. YOU CAN SEE IT IN THE PHOTO TAKEN IN MY GARDEN. IT TOOK 2 MONTHS TO INITIATE FLOWERING. EVERY TIME ,I APPLY VERMICOMPOST TO THE ROSE PLANT @ 200 GRAMS NEARLY 20 FLOWERS WILL BLOOM. SOON AFTER PRUNING OLD BRANCHES AFTER ONE MONTH ANOTHER 15-20 FLOWERS WILL APPEAR. VERMICOMPOST IS A BIG LEAP TOWARDS ORGANIC FARMING . FARMERS CAN RELY ON IT AND COMPLETELY STOP CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS AND THERE WILL NOT BE ANY REDUCTION IN PRODUCTIVITY.

ARs are already trained in various agril. and other issues by Agril. and all line departments at district level and mandal level . they will meet on every 3 rd monday at mandal head quarters and inturn go to their villages and enlighten the farming community on developmental activities and subsidy programmes of govt.This will certainly ensure spread of latest technology and enable more farmers to know about GOVT,. progarmmes and ensures its effective utilization. A.Rs are supplied with literature on AGRICULTURE . PADIPANTALU a magazine published by dept. of agriculture andhrapradesh,is also being supplied every month free of cost to them.An amount of Rs. 1000_ is paid to each AR as honourarium.

MY OBSERVATIONS AND ANALYSIS ON HIGHER YIELDS
HIGHER YIELDS IN VIZIANAGARAM DISTRICT of Andhra Pradesh
TIMELY SOWINGS ,APPLICATION OF OPTIMUM NITROGEN and
CONSERVATION OF NATURAL ENEMIES - the REASONS behind the success
RICE –NORMAL YIELD - 1848 kg/ha.
EXPECTED- 3700 kg/ha DURING KHARIF 2007 (REVISED)
( EARLIER EXPECTED IS 2992 Kgs)
The farmers of vizianagaram district are going to reap bumper harvests of paddy crop during kharif 2007. Thanks to natural enemies, who played a major role.
During kharif 2007, the seasonal conditions are very favorable for crop production. Higher yields expected in all the crops.
PESTICIDE CONSUMPTION REDUCED BY 75%.
· Pesticide consumption during current year up to October, 2007 is only 4.01 M.Ts. of Tech.Grade while the consumption during last year, up to October, 2006 is 16.0 M.Ts of Tech.Grade.
· Campaigns against pesticides by various agencies worked.
Paddy-Subsistence cultivation:
Paddy crop is cultivated in 1, 17,724 Ha., during kharif season . Majority of the area(70%) is under small rain fed tanks. These tanks need to be filled at least thrice by southwest monsoon rains, during the season to cater the needs of the paddy crop. In general, per Acre yield of paddy crop ranges between 1100 to 3712 kgs in various farming situations with a normal of 1848 kgs per hectare in the district ( All figures are in terms of Rice.)
Problems of paddy cultivation:
Small and scattered holdings, cultivation under small tanks, lack of supplemental irrigation facilities, erratic rain fall, late onset of monsoon, prolonged dry spells, and light textured soils low in organic carbon and nutrient contents, economically backwardness, poses serious problems on the productivity front, by which the paddy cultivation often lands into troubles.
Rain fed cultivation often leads to delayed sowings with over aged nurseries due to which application of excess ‘N’ by distressed farmers is a common phenomenon observed in the area. This situation causes severe pest problems, leading to indiscriminate use of pesticides, like Monocrotophos,Chlorpyrephos and Methyl parathion dust and some NEW GENERATION PESTICIDES and raise in cost of cultivation.
Ultimately low productivity of crops and low net returns, making farming community resource poor year after year, have become a characteristic feature of this North coastal district.
What happened in 2007?
Timely summer showers helped in good land preparation and sowings of Gingelly crop were taken up during May.
How ever, Sesamum crop failed due to heavy rains and water logging conditions during June 07. This helped in adding up of considerable quantities of organic matter and no depletion of soil nutrients took place. Farmers generally apply Farm yard manure to sesamum crop only which precedes paddy in early kharif and do not apply FYM to paddy.
Rains during June were so heavy that they helped in complete recharging of irrigation tanks on which the paddy cultivation predominantly takes place in the district.
Timely nursery sowings took place and transplantations in maximum area completed with early nursery. This has given ample time for the crop to put forth tillers. Further, during July and August months dry spells prevailed and deficit rain fall recorded in the district which led only to prevailing of I.D.condition in paddy fields resulting in heavy tillering.
Normally the tillers vary between 15-22 in which productive tillers are 11-12 in all paddy farming situations of the district. How ever in the current year the No. of tillers varied between 25-28 and the productive tiller percentage also increased. On an average each Paddy hill contained 20-22 productive tillers which is very interesting to note.
Early sowings, good No. of sunshine hours during July- Oct period, development of beneficial insects to control the pest complex and good growth might have helped for this.
OPTIMUM ‘N’ AND SOIL ORGANIC CARBON CONTENT PLAYED IMPORTANT ROLE:
Farmers applied first dose of UREA fertilizer (some DAP) during 2nd and 3rd weeks of July’07 and second dose in August month. Later there was no chance to apply 3rd dose due to continuous heavy rains during September and as the crop attained P.I stage, no fertilizer application was taken place in October. As a result of this, reduction of urea application was also taken place.
(How ever as the soil organic carbon content was maintained at higher levels due to incorporation of sesamum crop and no loss of nutrients occurred due to failure of sesamum crop, non application of 3rd dose of urea couldn’t show much difference on crop growth.) As the crop growth is satisfactory, farmers have not resorted to application of urea for the 3rd time.
This condition has led only to optimum plant growth and production of more no. of tillers and more over the leaf folder pest which develops mainly at places where urea application is high could not find its entry in the fields.
NATURAL ECOLOGICAL BALANCE MAINTAINED:
Though BPH and Jassid infestation started during early September, it only helped in availability of sufficient food for their natural enemies and never crossed economic injury levels due to which beneficial insects developed in sufficient numbers in paddy fields. The pests which occurred in epidemic level during 2005 (i.e. Leaf folder) and 2006 (BPH and Jassids) could not find their place during current year. Owing to the low nitrogen (say optimum) levels in the fields no pest has attained dangerous levels.
For example, the populations of Mirid bug, a natural enemy of BPH, have never been observed in previous years at these levels at light traps and street lights near the fields. Only Jassids and BPH were seen along with 1-2% Mirid bugs then.
(In fact I had to wait days together to catch a miridbug’s image in my camera last year. But during current year hundreds and even thousands of them are found at lights during night time.)
It is a fact that more than 75% of the farmers have not sprayed pesticides in the district, which resulted in non elimination of beneficial insects from the fields and their populations increased enormously which could easily suppress pest populations.
All these conditions have helped in rising of paddy yields by more than 100%. Now the farmers are very happy as they got higher yields with reduced cost of cultivations. Now a time has come to analyze this situation and learn from our own experiences. Farmers must realize that excess application of Nitrogenous fertilizers (Especially UREA) is the root cause of many pest problems and pesticides are not a solution for managing pests.

Farmers must realize that excess application of Nitrogenous fertilizers (Especially UREA) is the root cause of many pest problems and pesticides are not a solution for managing pests.

GOOD PADDY YIELDS ANTICIPATED
FARMERS OF VIZIANAGARAM DISTRICT ARE GOING TO REAP GOOD PADDY HARVESTS DURING KHARIF 2007.
THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS HELPED A LOT IN GETTING GOOD YIELDS.
EARLY TRANSPLANTATIONS
DRY SPELLS DURING AUGUST 07
•Excess rainfall (190.6 m.m) during June 2007 resulted in complete charging of Irrigation Tanks, which lead to timely transplantation of Paddy.
•Paddy area increased by 9%
•Dry spells occurred during August helped in excess tillering due to irrigated dry conditions in Paddy fields due to which nearly 25% excess tillering is observed
•Due to availability of sufficient water in Tanks, timely sowings, low pest problem, the Paddy yields are likely to increase by 20-25% (Normal-2397kgs. Expected 2876 to 2996 kgs per Hectare in terms of RICE.)
•Pesticide consumption reduced by 75% due to favourable seasonal conditions .
• Pesticide consumption during current year upto October, 2007 is only 4.01 M.Ts. Tech.Grade while the consumption during October, 2006 is 16.0 M.Ts Tech.Grade.

SESAMUM CROP IS RAISED IN AN AREA OF 707 Ha. IN KOTHAVALASA MANDAL AS AGAINST THE NORMAL AREA OF 684 Ha DURING PRE KHARIF.
FARMERS EXPECTED GOOD YIELDS OF THIS CROP.
HOW EVER THE CROP SUFFERED A SERIOUS SET BACK.
